Permissions

There are four permission levels that can be set for any group to any resource.

  • Read: The group's members can view the resource, e.g. read a protocol.
  • Use: The group's members can view and use the resource, e.g. add a material to a protocol.
  • Edit: The group's members can view, use, edit and delete the resource, e.g. change a materials description or remove a contact from a protocol.
  • Own: The group's members can view, use, edit, delete and change permissions for the resource.

Default permissions

By default the user who creates a resource has supreme control over it (own) and can never lose it. Everyone else will get the use permission.

Setting permissions

To set the permissions to a resource go to its edit page and you will find a section titled ”permissions”.

Child resource permission (for the curious)

Permissions can only be set to top level resources such as protocols, organisations and materials, not to child resources. Child resources will automatically get the same permissions as their parent, e.g. a user permitted to edit a protocol is also permitted to edit and change the components of the protocol. However, this doesn't mean that the user is permitted to edit the the actual resources used in the protocol themselves but merely the link between them, e.g. if your protocol includes a centrifuge you have the right to change how it appears in your protocol and also remove it from the protocol but you don't have the right to change the centrifuge object itself or remove it from the database entirely.
